Hundreds of homes planned for scheme near GCHQ

A major development project near GCHQ in Cheltenham's Golden Valley could see the construction of over 360 new homes. This ambitious project, which is the flagship initiative of Cheltenham Borough Council, will also include retail spaces, restaurants, a healthcare centre, and a transport hub.
The housing aspect of the development will consist of 165 one-bedroom apartments, 165 two-bedroom flats, 15 two-bedroom houses, and 20 three-bedroom homes.
GCHQ officials have stated that the project will significantly enhance collaboration between the government, academia, and the private sector, marking a turning point in national security efforts. They believe it will play a key role in advancing the science and technology transformation for the intelligence community.
The outline plans submitted to the council aim to create flexible commercial spaces, alongside the residential homes, healthcare centre, and community hub, all situated on the southern parcel of land off Fiddlers Green Lane.
The development is expected to reinforce Cheltenham’s position as the "UK capital for cyber," while also delivering thousands of new homes and jobs. The goal is to attract businesses focused on science and technology, particularly in the fields of cyber security, AI, deep tech, and quantum computing, building on the area's growing expertise in these sectors.
The proposal also includes a “Main Street” designed to encourage public transport use for future workers, while minimizing commercial traffic in residential areas. Local residents can view and provide feedback on the plans via the Cheltenham Borough Council’s online planning portal.
